sexual harrasment in cairo egypt... what on earth?????

Q: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7593765.stm read the article from this link on the bbc. i was soooooo gob smacked. im really shocked.. its been in the headlines for egypt for a long tiem and keeps coming up. what is going on with men in egypt? does anyone have an explanation or understanding of this mad, disgusting and haraam behaviour???? hold your horses iv had bad experinces in the west so shut your pie hole. before i wore hijab i used to get harassed by english white men. now i wear hijab doesnt happen anymore. but as a hijabi in cairo as one of those girls is im shocked. men should resepct women but even more so their sisters in islam. thanks Krys good article too. gets too the point too :) thanks for the answers guys. i would like to say im not havign a dig at egypt no way. becuase morocco is just as bad i just got back from their i wear khimar and long skirts etc and i had a few problems even with my parents. so its an arab thing lol. it is i feel becuase teh status women are given they are not given the respect they deserve iv seen alot while in morocco. and it is down to teh way they are raised, education or lack of it but also education in islam. alot of the men and woemn know the quran but ask them to interpret the words and they look at you blankly. to me its as though they dont take quran or islam seriuosly... as iv said before islam for them is a culture not a religion. they do things out of habit. pray and fast becuase that is what they are brought up to do... but deep down they dont really care or are bothered. thats from what i have witnessed while in morocco. thanks :)

A: I think there are a couple of reasons. I posted a blog article discussing this article that you might find interesting: http://honourablerekhyet.wordpress.com/2008/07/18/egypts-sexual-harassment-cancer/ Basically, I think a culture of apathy is the root cause, and is one of the biggest problems facing Egypt today. As long as people have no future, why worry about what they do now? There is no hope of a better tomorrow in Egypt anymore. It saddens me to say it, but I think it's true.
