Q: I'm looking at travelling to Benin in about 6 weeks time, and staying for a month. I will be travelling with my mother, and we have local friends who can guide us etc. Has anyone had any experience of Benin? any info or hints would be appreciated!

A: I used to make a living from traveling round West Africa. Ive been to Benin several times on business and holiday. If you're flying in, You'll be in the capital Cotonou. Cotonou is known for its ports (importation). I trust you've done your research and realize Benin has a french way of life (siestas, food, language e.t.c). I personally recommend these must-see towns: Ouidah- has a ghost town like look, very calm, peaceful and full of history. There you can actually take a tour, walking the same path slaves did during the slave trade era. There are several temples with so much culture attached. Abomey- The former capital of the country is culture pact. Get first hand understanding of their history and culture by seeing it and living it. Ganvie- A settlement on water. People live in little thatched huts and move around on canoes (I recommend you only visit, dint try spending the night there as there is no air-conditioning and since you're on water there are LOTS OF MOSQUITOES at night. If I recall.. its about 30 minutes from Cotonou. Since you have local friends, I know you're going enjoy your trip. The people of Benin are generally very warm friendly trustworthy and easy going. Benin is the only country with which Ive never had problems with logistics. Enjoy a true African experience and the opportunity to really understand and experience another culture in an exciting rejuvenating way.
