Q: If you are an American citizen, how dangerous is it to travel to other countries? Expecially the middle east? I want to travel to Instanbul, Turkey to see a friend I haven't seen in ages. I know i mispelled it geez -.-

A: I've been there a few times and I just came back from there. It's fine. Turkey might have a political situation in a few weeks, but being an American is fine if you stay in Istanbul and the other Western Cities. I wouldn't go to Van, but Istanbul is perfectly fine. The attack a few weeks ago was in front of the Consulates office, but it wasn't against the US. It was a domestic situation, and they choose the location b/c it would bring more media attention. In general, some people might say "rich American" or if you are a single female some of the men might harass you. Really, safety wise it's fine. Be smart and respectful, and you should be fine. Although there is a debate as to whether Turkey is part of the Middle East.... stay out of that debate while you are there :)
