Were Black South Africans prohibited from studying their home languages during the Apartheid era?

Q: I have heard something to this effect, but I'm not sure. ....in government schools?

A: I'm not sure, but I do think so because my folks did study their home languages... actually I think they did. My high school also did for a while, but decided it was too much and just left the option of Afrikaans and Zulu as a 2nd language. I do however wish they'd teach black languages especially in schools in the city since the schools in their respective rural areas do teach black languages... a lot of black kids seem to not know their mother tongues anymore.
