Q: Something that will say 'i am sorry' and something that will just make things worse if you try it I am just curious - i know what i feel won't fix it

A: An apology accompanied with a small gift and the god honest truth as to the reason why you behaved that way, is the best option! The worst is to lie, because they probably guessed the reason already and they will lose even more respect for you if you are too proud to admit it. Don't come up with a lame lie. Been there, done that, tried the truth, and it works. We all make stupid mistakes. If they won't give you the chance to apologise...write a card.
