Q: My mother met one of my old school friends in the mall a while back and told her that I married into wealth and that I run my own business and a whole lot of other stuff. None of it is true. I have no idea why she did that. I know parents want to show off with their kids, but if you can't tell the truth, why don't you just say nothing? Have one of your parents ever done that? And to those of you who are parents, have you done this?

A: When my mom (bless her soul) found out that I worked for Telkom in SA, she always used to tell her friends that I fixed telephones. Somehow in her mind she must have thought that it must have been a stable job and that I was a made man. Little did she know that Telkom was more than just telephones. Until today I'm still known as the telephone fitter in the family and amongst her friends. When I left SA to persue my career in radio and microwave telecoms overseas, she was not very happy with me for giving up my "telephone repairman career". I think she went to her grave still unhappy about my move overseas to work on "microwaves".
