Q: I knew a Tunisian 1 yr ago and i've told him i love him and he said he loves me too. I'm Chinese in HK but he's Tunisian in Tunisia and I've never meet a boy like him...he's really nice and have good personality. He said he will marry me if i'm Tunisian too...it's too bad. He said it doesn't care if i'm a Chinese...it's bcox Tunisian think that those who is out of Tunisia is not perfect to marry Tunisian. I do learning Arabic for few months...communication between us is not a problem. He speaks french, English and Spanish as well:) But he scares that he can't go further with me bcox of family. I've met his mother and brother and some cousins and friends already and they're very nice to me. But i dunno it's bcox of his father or not. And religion is not the problem too...we do really understand each other a lot. but anyway...i'm just 18 and he's 20 and maybe we're still young. However, I want to go to Tunisia to see him or just for travelling.I want to know what's the Tunisian's thinking

A: I'm an American women who is married to a Tunisian man and I live in Tunisia. The thinking here in Tunisia is divided. A lot of the people are starting to have open minds about many things because they are able to travel and work outside the country and so forth. But there are still some (usually the older generations and the lower income familes) who hold tight onto traditions. If the family of the man you love falls into one of these categories, then it is very likely that his parents want that he marries with a Tunisian. They feel that if their son marries with a foreigner, 1) he'll move to a different country, or 2) the wife will leave and take the kids with her and never return. This is a scary thing for them because Tunisians hold family very dear to their heart and it is at the center of their lives. If you have met his family and they had no problems with you, then maybe he is just not ready to marry yet. Most men in Tunisia don't marry until their 30's or later. I remember all of my husbands friends teasing him because he was so young (27) when we married. I can sympathize with what you are going through. I had a hard time when I was in America and my (now) husband was here in Tunisia. If you ever need someone to talk to, or need any other advice, please feel free to contact me.
