Q: Men can have more than 1 wife as it was before? I have heared a rumour that president Ben Ali gave a new law which authorizes tunisian men to be polygamists again??! It's sounds bit improbable to me but if you have any idea whether this is true or not let me know.. thanks
A: This is NOT true! It is a joke that has been going around (men tell it to their wives/girlfriends when they are joking around -some do it when they are fighting) for a few years now. There is no truth to it. Tunisian law still allows only one wife per man. The only exception is for those who are nationals of a country where multiple wives is allowed, and they have to have been married in that country. Example: a man from Saudia can have four wives and not be prosecuted if they all come to live in Tunisia. *BUT* that Saudi man can NOT come to Tunisia and take a Tunisian for his second wife. Also, a Tunisian man cannot go marry four wives in another country and bring them all back to live in Tunisia with him. Since he is Tunisian, he will be subjected to Tunisian law, and Tunisian law forbids this. If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me
