Q: I am moving to Dubai in a couple weeks. I am planning to live with my boyfriend. Can I get in legal trouble for this? Would it be better to just get married and how hard is that? We are both Christian. I am American, he is Indian.
A: Officially it is considered a crime to live together without being married because it's against Islamic Law. Please be aware that your bf can not sponsor you and without a sponsor you will receive a 30 days visa, have to pay for the extension of another 30 days and then have to leave the country. Every time you have to do this, you also will have to pay for health insurance. As long as you want to go through this, not want to open up a bank account, not being covered for medical (beside emergencies) and as long as you do not plan to get pregnant, go for it and take the risk. It is true, that many foreign girls in the UAE live together with men without being married. But these couples mostly met here and many of the girls are Asians glad not to stay in shared rooms no more. You also check out if accomodation is provided for your friend. In case it is, the company may have him as a bachelor living in shared accomodation with other men. Then you will not be able to live with him.
